How to check if ChatGPT and other AI assistants mention your company

More people now ask an AI assistant instead of searching: "What are the best tools for…?", "What did this company announce?". To know whether you are in those answers, ask the questions your buyers ask, on several assistants, more than once, and keep score. Here is a method you can follow by hand, and what to look for.

Step by step

  1. Write the questions your buyers would ask. Most should not name your company: "Which companies offer … in [your country]?", "What is the best … for …?", "What are the alternatives to [a competitor]?". Add a few that do name you, such as "What is [company] and what does it do?", to check the AI describes you correctly.
  2. Ask each question on each assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek and Grok), with web search on, in a new conversation and signed out where you can, so earlier chats do not colour the answer. Ask from the country your buyers are in.
  3. Ask each open question two or three times. Answers vary; the pattern across asks is what counts.
  4. Record four things for every answer: are you named; are you named before your competitors; are the facts right (what you do, prices, figures); and which websites the assistant cited.
  5. Repeat before and after each announcement, and monthly. The change over time tells you whether your coverage is reaching the answers.

What to look at

MeasureWhat it tells you
Named, when nobody asked about youWhether AI recommends you to buyers who do not know you yet
Named before competitorsYour share of voice in AI answers
Facts rightWhether the AI repeats outdated or wrong information about you
Sources citedThe websites the AI trusts for your topic: the places worth being on

The sources are the to-do list

AI assistants with web search write their answers from the pages they find. The websites they cite for your topic, such as "best of" guides, trade publications, review sites and forums, are where your company needs to be mentioned. If a page the AI keeps citing does not mention you, that page, or one like it, is the next target. Your own site matters too: a clear description of what you do, an FAQ that answers buyers' questions, and consistent facts everywhere.

How Clipping Report does it

Clipping Report asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek and Grok, plus Google's AI answers, the questions a journalist, investor or customer would ask, each assistant running its own live web search. It checks whether the company is named, named first, described correctly and cited, and maps the sites the assistants rely on. With a coverage report it runs four checks around a release, before it goes out when you order early and then over the following days, so you see the release taking effect; coverage plus AI visibility starts from $79 per press release. Frequently asked questions

Do AI assistants give everyone the same answer?

No. Answers vary from one ask to the next, by country, and with what the assistant finds in its web search at that moment. That is why one check is not enough: ask each question more than once and look at rates, such as "named in 15 of 20 answers", rather than a single yes or no.

Why does my company not appear in AI answers?

Usually because the pages the assistant reads for your topic, such as "best of" lists, trade media and review sites, do not mention you, or because your own site does not state clearly what you do. A name that is also an everyday word makes it harder still, because the assistant may not realise it is a company.

How often should I check?

Before and after each announcement, and then monthly. AI assistants pick up new coverage over days and weeks, so a single check right after a release shows only the start.

Can I make AI assistants recommend my company?

Nobody can guarantee what an AI assistant says. What you can do is improve what it reads: clear facts on your own site, coverage in the media it trusts, accurate profiles and genuine reviews. Then measure again to see what changed.
